The 25th Scientific Symposium of the GCC History and Archaeology Association has opened in Oman, bringing together researchers, specialists and archaeology enthusiasts to explore the Gulf regionâs rich historical and cultural heritage.
The three-day symposium began in Muscat on August 24, 2026, with around 180 participants from Oman and abroad taking part in the scientific gathering.
30 Research Papers to Explore Gulf History
Participants are scheduled to present 30 scientific research papers covering different aspects of Gulf history, archaeology, heritage and culture across multiple historical periods.
The studies draw on archaeological field surveys, excavations and academic research while examining the Gulf regionâs wider:
â˘Â   Civilizational development
â˘Â   Intellectual heritage
â˘Â   Economic history
â˘Â   Social development
â˘Â   Cultural identity
The symposium provides a platform for researchers to discuss new findings and exchange knowledge about archaeological and historical developments across the GCC states.
Oman Highlights Importance of Scientific Research
Eng. Ibrahim bin Saeed Al Kharousi, Undersecretary of Omanâs Ministry of Heritage and Tourism for Heritage, said hosting the event reflects the ministryâs commitment to supporting scientific research and strengthening awareness of the regionâs civilizational legacy.
He noted that bringing specialists together creates opportunities to exchange expertise and examine recent archaeological discoveries while encouraging further cooperation between researchers.
According to Al Kharousi, greater scientific collaboration can contribute to preserving national memory and the cultural identity of Gulf societies.
Symposium Encourages Regional Research Cooperation
The gathering is also expected to strengthen cooperation among historians, archaeologists, academic institutions and heritage organisations across the GCC.
By sharing the latest discoveries and research methods, participants can develop a clearer understanding of how communities across the Arabian Gulf evolved over different historical periods.
The symposium also demonstrates the growing importance placed by GCC countries on documenting archaeological sites, protecting historical assets and making regional heritage more accessible to future generations.
Exhibition Showcases Omanâs Archaeological Heritage
An accompanying exhibition has also been organised as part of the event.
The exhibition features:
- Â Archaeological artefacts discovered in Oman
- Scientific publications covering history and heritage
- A chronological timeline illustrating Omanâs history
- A tourism information centre showcasing the Sultanateâs cultural attractions
The exhibition provides participants and visitors with an opportunity to see archaeological discoveries and learn more about Omanâs historical development.
Preserving the Gulfâs Shared Heritage
History and archaeology play an important role in documenting the development of societies across the Arabian Peninsula.
From ancient settlements and maritime trade routes to forts, burial sites and early urban communities, archaeological discoveries continue to provide new insights into the Gulfâs connections with neighbouring regions and ancient civilizations.
Events such as the GCC History and Archaeology Association symposium offer researchers an opportunity to bring these discoveries together and develop a broader understanding of the regionâs shared cultural legacy.
The 25th edition in Oman reinforces the GCCâs continuing efforts to preserve archaeological heritage, support academic research and strengthen cooperation among specialists across the Gulf region.
